Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@mountainaquatics.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Green pond water is usually caused by algae — especially during warm months. Add beneficial pond bacteria, reduce feeding, use floating plants for shade, and consider a UV clarifier.

Good filtration, regular debris removal, and balanced plant life are key. Avoid overfeeding fish and use a biological/mechanical filter setup.

Yes — unless you’re creating a small wildlife pond. A pond pump circulates water and a pond filter system keeps the water clear by removing debris and supporting beneficial bacteria.

It depends on your pond’s purpose:

  • Koi ponds: 2.5–3 feet minimum.

  • Water gardens (plant-focused): 18–24 inches is ideal.

  • Backyard wildlife ponds: Can be shallower, 12–18 inches, with sloped edges for animals to enter/exit safely.

Yes, if your pond is deep enough for the climate. In cold areas, make sure your fish pond is at least 2.5 feet deep and use a pond de-icer or aerator in winter to keep a hole in the ice.

Popular pond fish species include:

  • Goldfish for ponds – hardy and easy to care for.

  • Koi fish – colorful, need more space and depth.

  • Shubunkin goldfish – vibrant and adaptable.

  • Mosquitofish – excellent for natural mosquito control.

This is usually a sign of low oxygen levels in your pond. It can happen in hot weather or if your pond is overstocked.

Fix it:

  • Add a pond aerator or fountain.

  • Improve filtration.

  • Reduce feeding temporarily.

Yes — but tap water often contains chlorine or chloramine, which can harm fish.

Always use a pond-safe dechlorinator when topping off or refilling your pond.

Add submerged plants, beneficial bacteria, barley straw, and avoid overfeeding. Good filtration and regular maintenance are key.
